Founder story

From Houdini to Homeward Pet

How a childhood escape artist named Houdini—and the scramble that followed—inspired Homeward Pet and the idea of preparing a Come Home Kit in advance.

Homeward Pet began with my childhood dog, whom we nicknamed Houdini because she was always finding a way out.

Everything had to happen while we were worried

When Houdini disappeared, finding her meant walking through the neighborhood calling her name, making and posting flyers, contacting the local shelter, and putting notices online.

The work itself was understandable. The timing was the hard part. Photos had to be found. Details had to be remembered. Messages had to be written. Places had to be contacted. Everything had to be figured out while we were already worried.

“I don’t want the first time I gather Rupert’s best photos and identifying details to be the moment he is missing.”

Then came Rupert

Now I am an adult with Rupert—and work, responsibilities, and a life that would not pause if he ever left the yard. I started thinking about what I would actually need in that first hour: clear photos, his identifying details, and somewhere to send people.

None of that is difficult to gather on a calm afternoon. It is much harder to gather while panicking. That gap between what is easy now and overwhelming later became the starting point for Homeward Pet.

A private profile while everything is okay

Homeward Pet is designed around a simple rhythm: prepare while your pet is safe, then activate a Come Home Kit only if it is needed. A private profile keeps current photos, identifying details, and safety information organized. An active alert can turn selected information into a public page and printable materials.

The product cannot promise a reunion, replace a microchip, or contact shelters and veterinarians automatically. Its job is narrower: help a guardian begin with clearer information instead of a blank page.

This is not about expecting the worst

It is about doing a little now, while everything is okay, so there is less to assemble if the day you hope never comes actually does.

Prepare calmly. Act quickly.
